Meat CSA

Dear Meat Lover,

Welcome to the 2015 Meat CSA!

What is a Meat CSA?

Our Meat CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a way for you to provide your family with ethically raised, Prince Edward County beef, chicken, lamb, pork directly from Nyman Farms and have it DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR every month from June to November. (We also have free range eggs!)

Instead of raising livestock and trying to sell it…we sell it first and then raise it. That’s how a CSA works. This reduces waste and costs.

Why a Meat CSA?

Grocery stores are more like minefields these days. To get the real picture from the labels you not only have to be a chemist but also a lawyer! This is the result of food production becoming a business – about making profits – instead of promoting good health.

In order to increase profits, mass produced livestock are confined, given feed containing pesticides, and routinely given growth hormones and antibiotics. There is nothing natural or humane about their raising and the ill health effects are passed onto us when we eat.

At Nyman Farms, we feed our animals their natural food – pesticide free grass (50% homegrown grain for foul), allow them to range freely, and breed them in their natural season.

Why Nyman Farms? Let us tell you more about the program!

Knowing where your food comes from and who produces it, is the first and most important step toward good health for you and your family.

We offer a selection of shares to fit your needs. You have the option of purchasing a mixed package where you recieve equal amounts of all four meats or you can choose to build your own package (more detailed information is available below). The chicken and pork are delivered in June, July and August with the lamb and beef delivered in September, October and November. We do the deliveries in this order to allow the animals to go out to pasture for the longest period of time possible. The chickens are ready to go to pasture early in the spring as they can rummage throw the short grass. We keep a detailed record of what cuts you receive in your package to ensure that you are not receiving the same cuts each month. We like to change things up!

You have the option each month to add some free range eggs to your delivery or an extra meats. For example: some customers opt to add a pound of bacon to one of the fall deliveries and a dozen eggs. We do our very best to accommodate!

Pick and Choose Share

At Nyman Farms, we are trying to cater to the needs of our members.  In 2011 we introduced the pick and choose package for those that like some meats alot and like some meats a little.  Here’s how it works.

All four meats are available in 15lb blocks (5 lbs per month).  As an example, if you like chicken and pork a lot, you may decide to order 2 blocks of each giving you 10 lbs per month, and you may like lamb a little so you may decide to order only one block. That would be 5 lbs per month.  Your not a beef eater, you may decide to not order any beef.

This pack is perfectly suited the those that want to choose more of the meats that they like and less of those they don’t like.  There will be a 3 block minimum (any varieties  added together) and no maximum limit to the number of blocks that can be ordered.

Prices for the Pick and Choose share are as follows;

Lamb        $ 181.50 per block

Chicken   $ 82.50   per block

Pork          $ 107.25 per block

Beef           $ 132.00 per block

Here’s an example. If you get a half share, mixed package, for six months…you pay approximately $8.40/lb for a mix of cuts of including all four meats, including steak, lamb chops, roasts, sausages, bacon, ground, etc.

As far as price goes, here’s the thing. For non-organic meat in the grocery store, you might pay $5.39/lb for pork loin chops…but you’ll also pay $6.29/lb for beef eye of round or $8.29/lb for top sirloin steak – but they are not grass fed and therefore lack the significant nutritional advantage.

Does this mean we are actually cheaper than non-organic meat in the grocery store? No, but we’re close – and if you value the immeasurable health benefits of naturally raised meat by means of ethical and sustainable farming…then yes, our value cannot be beat.

What should I order?

Each cut is frozen when it arrives at your door.

This allows you serve your family year round – as long as you have the freezer space! So don’t think in terms of having to serve up 20 pounds of meat every month! Calculate what your family will consume for the year.

However, take the time to be sure about your order. Please contact us at 613-476-6120 or jcnyman@kos.net   if you would like assistance on deciding what would be right for your family.

Can I try some out first?
Of course you can! If you wish to try a sample of meat ahead of ordering a CSA package you are more than welcome too! If you wish to come to the house and choose some meats to try, you certainly can. If you wish to give us a budget we can also put together a sample package for you as well.

When will I get my first order?

The first order will be delivered Saturday, June 28, 2014.

Can I use my credit card to pay?

Yes, you can pay online using your credit card. Let us know and we will email you a payment request from PayPal – the most popular and secure way to pay online. You can also pay by mailing us a cheque.

Cancellations and refunds

If you are unhappy with your CSA or unable to receive it for any reason – you can obtain a refund by finding someone to replace you / take over your CSA. We are unable to give refunds directly. We may have a list of people interested. Please inquire.

We look forward to being able to provide and contribute to your dinner table!

Orders will be taken through email.  In your email please include contact info for delivery day, package of your choice and your prefered method of payment. Emails can be sent to jcnyman@kos.net or you can choose to call us at 613-476-6120 (home).
